Our immediate ambition: to reduce CO2 emissions by increasing the reuse of PET bottles

Updated: Sep 12, 2023

To be extremely concrete, let’s talk about what we know best: our productions!

Of their total we consider for a moment only the finished products (excluding the intermediate semi-finished products) and from our management software we read some numbers:

  • in the year 2019 Mapel Textile has turnover (and therefore previously produced) 5,390,612 meters of ribbons, strings, shoulder straps and elastic, entirely made of virgin polyester;

  • the following year, despite the global crisis dictated by the current pandemic (COVID-19), thanks to the precious G.R.S. Certification (Global Recycled Standard), the losses were contained, with articles totaling 4,406,333 meters (of which 698,090 meters, or 15.84%, of eligible certified recycled product, resulting from the recovery of PET bottles);

  • in 2021 there was then a slight recovery, with 5,292,708 meters of total invoiced products (of which 1,105,742 meters, or 20.89%, on recycled articles), although the most relevant value was certainly the increase of 58.40%, from 2020 to 2021, of the meters in products belonging to eligible G.R.S.;

  • with the 2022 our increase has been decidedly more sensitive, with values advanced to the period pre-pandemia and total turnover attested, on the products, for 5.853.968 meters (of which 1.291.698 meters, pairs to 22.07%, inherent to eligible G.R.S.), with a ulterior leap forward, current year over previous year, 16.82% of recycled items.

If we translate these numbers in environmental values, relating to the distinct bases of ns. products, we note that since 2020, the year in which with the GRS certification we have proposed recycled materials (the most of which concerns the recovery of PET bottles), we have obtained:

  • a reduction equivalent to approximately 33 tonnes of CO2 emissions in 2020;

  • a reduction equivalent to approximately 53 tonnes of CO2 emissions in 2021;

  • a reduction equivalent to approximately 62 tonnes of CO2 emissions in 2022.

Based on the order book already acquired, the future prospects are extremely encouraging and suggest, for 2023, a further increase in recycled products estimated at 16%, able to reduce CO2 emissions for equivalent 72 tons.

But we hope to be wrong and far from wrong, thanks to the environmental sensitivity of our customers, to ensure that the reduction of CO2 emissions is even more substantial.
